The major reason for economic diversification is to increase economic growth and development of a country. Efficient port bunkering development is one of the strategies for diversifying an
economy and creating multiple investment portfolios that would in turn provide employment
opportunities for the teeming army of unemployed youths as well as stabilize the economy.
However, a nonfunctional bunkering system would defeat these laudable objectives and result to
colossal waste of public and private funds.
Taking advantage of advanced analysis approaches, we provide detailed analysis of annual bunkering operations at the ports based on satellite AIS data. We develop effective detection algorithms to discover bunkering operations at the port, purely based on satellite AIS data. We measure the efficiency of the operations by calculating the overall waiting time of the vessels along with delays, and idle times at arrival and departures. Having this insight, we propose optimal scheduling of the port bunkering operations to reduce the waiting time of the vessels during the bunkering operations.
